Social Justice Ministry
Syllabus Diaconate Formation
Social Justice Class February – December
2008 Coordinator: Susan
Sullivan Lead Instructor: Ron
Chandonia Text: Compendium of the Social Doctrine of
the Church, USCCB Publishing, 2004 Through lectures,
discussions, and outside speakers, this class will examine Catholic social
teachings as outlined in the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of
the Church. You will be expected to complete assigned readings on
time, to respond to readings and class presentations in weekly (e-mail)
notes, and to complete three short papers synthesizing your understanding
of the materials presented in the course. Below is a tentative
outline of reading assignments, topics for outside speakers, and due dates
for the three papers.
Within three days after each class, you should e-mail the instructor a brief note summing up what you learned from the readings and/or class sessions. In this note, please include any questions or concerns you have about the topics or materials we are considering. Your weekly e-mail
should be directed to atlantadeacons@gmail.com. You
can also use this address to contact the instructor about any other
matters that arise. (If the
phone is a handier option, the contact number is 770
631-0060.) The three assigned
papers should bring together your understanding of our readings and
discussions (to that point) on three of the major issues arising out of
Catholic social teaching: ·
Paper #1 – The role of
the institutional Church in a pluralistic secular
society; ·
Paper #2 –
Strengthening family life to foster a more just social order;
and ·
Paper #3 – Increasing
social awareness and practical action on the parish
level. These are not research assignments; they require only your thoughtful reflection on the materials presented in the course. Each paper should be at least three typed (double-spaced) pages in length. |
